More Saga Troops

One of my hobby goals for this year is to try to get back into the swing of putting some stuff on my blog. In order to make that happen with the demands of work/kids/life, I am going to try doing more quick and dirty posts…

So in that vein, here are some hastily done and somewhat washed out photos of some recent stuff I painted for Saga. These are largely in support of my Norman/Frank/Crusader forces.

Saga Normans

Since I’ve resuscitated the blog might as well keep going with an eye-candy post of my Normans for Saga.  These are a mix of Conquest Games plastic Normans, Crusader, and Gripping Beast.  This is a nice force for Saga as the same troops can be used as Normans, Capetian Franks, or as Crusaders from Crescent and Cross.  I have been reading a good bit of the fascinating history of the Normans in Italy, so decided to give these a more arid basing scheme (which works well when fielding them as Crusaders as well).

Saga – The Escort

This Saga game took place a while ago (well before the IABSM game in the last post) so I’m not going to try and dredge up the particulars from my addled brain, but I’ll hit the high points.  For this one, we broke out the newly painted pigs, carts, and ponies and played The Escort, one of the scenarios in the Saga rulebook, with the Irish warlords serving to help the local monastery bring in supplies provided by their flock in the countryside.   On the other side, a band of Vikings looks to score some quick loot and maybe knock a priest or two on the head in the name of Odin.

Mustering the Wargames Factory Anglo-Saxons

A while back I posted that I had won some freebies from Wargames Factory.  I’ve been slowly getting these figures prepped to form an Anglo-Saxon or Anglo-Danish warband for Saga.

Saga – Things to Fight Over

One of the more interesting looking of the generic scenarios in the Saga rules is The Escort, in which one force is attempting to escort a train of valuables to safety.  The rules provide some very loose guidelines for the baggage elements in terms of size, but after that, it’s up to the imagination of the gamer as to what he wants to include.  Read More…

The Saga of Ceallach ui Móráin – Battle of the Three Crossings

A couple of buddies came over to my place for a game of Saga recently.  After a short learning game in which Brett learned the dangers of leaving your warlord alone in a field with no lifeguard around him, we set up for the main event using the Battle at the Ford scenario from the Saga rulebook.

The Saga of Ceallach ui Móráin

I got a little time to jet up to Your Hobby Place recently and was able to get in a Saga game against the store owner Dave at the head of his Normans.  I almost had enough Irish for a standard 6 point warband for Saga, so recruited a few Viking mercenaries to fill out the ranks and away we went.

Good Things Come to Those Who… Paint.

A while back the folks over at Wargames Factory announced an online contest looking for painted samples of their minis.  The contest offered a substantial prize  package with 5 levels of awards (from $100 to $20) in each of their product ranges.  As I was trying to get my Vikings finished, I put a little effort into the last of my Wargames Factory minis and did my best to take some good photos of them – which is usually my weakest link in sharing my painting efforts.  Read More…

Saga

Around Thanksgiving I picked up a copy of the recently released dark ages skirmish rules, Saga.  These are written by Studio Tomahawk, a French game company, in a collaboration with Gripping Beast Miniatures in the UK.  After a month of reading and a bit of solo tinkering, I was able to get over to the FLGS (Your Hobby Place in Martinsburg, WV) for my first game.

Pig Wars – Flotsam and Jetsam

Mik named our latest Pig Wars game Flotsam and Jetsam in his recent game report and I liked the name so decided to pilfer it.   The scenario featured two bands of Vikings against a band of shipwreck survivors sent from the Holy Church to Ireland and their Irish rescuers.
